Why You (And Everyone Else) Should Be Using Retinol

Selecting the right products for your skin can be very overwhelming. With a plethora of products and brands to choose from, it can be difficult to nail down exactly which products would benefit you best. The truth is that everyone’s skin is incredibly different, and the needs of each person can vary greatly. With that being said, there are also a few products I recommend to EVERY one of my patients. That’s right, EVERY patient.

The price of products can add up quickly, and so your selections should be chosen wisely. If my patients are on a budget and want the most “bang for their buck”, I recommend they are armed with AT LEAST these three weapons at all times: Retinol, topical Vitamin C, and SPF. Vitamin C and SPF both benefit new and existing skin, while retinol helps to speed up the cell turnover and allow the new skin to shine. As we age, our cell turnover rate begins to slow and only continues to do so. Thick, keratinized skin begins to build up and appear dull and even “crepe” like. Retinol helps to prevent this thickening process and keeps the skin cells moving <and exiting> in a speedy fashion. In addition to keeping the newest and freshest skin visible, retinol also helps to smooth out fine lines and wrinkles, kill p. acnes bacteria known to cause breakouts, and even out the overall skin tone.

A common misconception about retinol is that is always irritating and causes constant peeling, redness, and itching. Many improvements have been made in product development, and retinols are now <much> more cosmetically elegant than in previous years. Strengths available vary, and most formulations are now packed with hydrating ingredients that keep irritation and visible flaking and peeling at bay. Something else to keep in mind about when using retinols is that most patients have to develop a tolerance, meaning that nightly use needs to be reached over time. Patients also need to remember that using an exfoliating product, like retinol, means sun exposure needs to be eliminated. If a patients skin is exposed to the sun while using an actively formulated product the skin is more susceptible to future damage, and the dangerous, cancer-causing rays of the sun. You can remain safe by minimizing exposure, wearing hats when outdoors, and always lathering up the SPF (even if most of your time is spent indoors). Your skincare products are an investment, so you want to make the most of them!

For more information about retinols and home care regimens, please contact Hobgood Facial Plastic Surgery and schedule a complimentary consultation with Annie.

“Why Do You Work In Plastics?”- My Truth About Working In Aesthetic Medicine

For as long as I can remember, I’ve been a girly-girl. “Lipstick Dependent”, as my mom and Aunt Jan like to call it (a trait that I proudly-inherited). I’ve always enjoyed beauty, skin care, and everything in between.  My career that started in traditional spa-like esthetics was a natural calling to me. After working in the field for a few years, it became apparent just how much you could do to positively affect the skin as a nurse working in the same industry.

I can remember arriving to nursing school and always feeling like the classroom’s black sheep when our professors would ask us <every time>  “What kind of nurse do you want to be?” on each course’s first day. Common answers always included pediatrics, trauma, ER, ICU, etc…. You can imagine the surprise and confusion of my instructors and classmates when my answer was always “Aesthetics” (sealed with a smile). But… “Why do you want to work in plastics?” (cue the judgey eyes). The answer for me is simple, and it is that aesthetics allows me to help others. While it is obvious that aesthetics isn’t exactly saving lives, it is a critical piece that involves improving self-love, self-esteem, and allowing one’s best self to shine through. As a nurse, I can work on deeper layers of the skin and produce clinical results with measurable changes. And when you look good, you feel good.

While plastic surgery is typically viewed as something extremely superficial, and sometimes even scary when overdone, I’d like to put a (polite) reminder out there that it doesn’t have to be. I didn’t go to nursing school so I could over-inject lips and send my patients out to scare the public. Many of our patients suffer skin issues that while may not be life-threatening, are extremely important, and even sometimes devastating to them. Imagine (and maybe you don’t have to because you’ve experienced this yourself), if you had severe acne, burns, or scarring on your face that you had to literally wear on your face for everyone to see all of the time. Some skin issues, like cellulite and hyperpigmentation can be easily concealed-facial issues aren’t always that simple. When plastic surgery, aesthetic enhancement, or a new skin care routine is adapted, you shouldn’t be able to tell. Sure, you can tell that the person looks better, but you can’t quite hit the nail on the head- “What did she do? She looks so… well-rested.”

I love my job, and sincerely appreciate the opportunity to help people every single day. It doesn’t feel like work when I spend my days at the office because I get to share my excitement and education with others. I feel very privileged to be appointed someone’s go-to person that they trust with their insecurities, and self-appointed flaws. Nothing warms my heart more than having someone tell me that they appreciated my information, or how I have been able to positively influence their skin health and self-love. I love watching patient’s skin <and self-esteem> glow! Please know that if you visit me at Hobgood Facial Plastic Surgery your information and treatment plans are always confidential and I am here to help if ever you need. I hope for the chance to meet you soon, and welcome you with open arms!

Be well,

Annie

Shopping Skin Care (Safely) Online

I consider myself a shopaholic. A buyer. A trier. A product junkie- I can’t help it! And with online shopping, I am even more enabled. My sick addiction is literally available at my fingertips, and can be completed with the click of a few buttons (in my pajamas). But this isn’t about me, this is about you…

How do you know which sites are safe to buy from when it comes to skin and hair care? Which sites are authentic, certified distributors of the companies they are selling? Frequently we have patients call with frustrations to ask about products that they see online for sale that are listed below MSRP price on websites such as Amazon.com , Ebay.com , etc. We often hear statements such as “Why should I buy it through you, when I can get it for less?” -allow me to explain. I do not feel that the dangers of purchasing on unauthorized sites is fully-comprehended.
When purchasing online, you should always buy directly through the company, or a certified distributor. How do you know a certified distributor versus an illegal third party seller? When it comes to skin care, hair products, and herbal remedies I can tell you that more likely than not, sites like Amazon and Ebay, and those selling at a lesser cost are selling illegally. With lowered prices, it can be tempting to purchase from them, but it is not at all deemed as “safe” by the FDA. It is a confusing concept to accept because often times they do represent authentic products, like books, movies, clothes, furniture, etc. But when it comes to your skin, you need to avoid purchasing through these sites at all costs. The reason you’re often finding cheaper prices is because the product could be expired, watered down, or have additional chemicals added to add volume (after half of the bottle’s contents have been removed).
I always stick to buying my products through local vendors, major department stores (Nordstrom.com , Sephora.com , Blissworld.com – to name a few) and authorized online dealers. I can tell you with confidence that Dermstore.com , SkincareRX.com , Lovelyskin.com , and Skinstore.com are all safe, and authorized dealers for the companies that they represent- and they often offer free shipping. You can also contact the companies directly and ask a customer service representative if you find a site offering your coveted product (because sometimes they can be hard to find), if the site offering it is legitimate. As a former representative of a few skin care companies, I can tell you that we loved hearing from our customers, identifying local distributors for them, and identifying safe sites to purchase through. On the flip side, it was also important to be alerted of illegal sales so illegally-sold products could be removed from the websites. I say, if ever in doubt, reach out.

Your skin is the largest organ your body has, and it needs to be protected. Try to remember that all products applied are also absorbed- so choose wisely. I hope this helps, and as always please comment with any questions- I am always happy to help! Have a great day.

May: Melanoma Awareness Month!

Melanoma Awareness Month

Donut…. Let me catch you doing this!

I’ve said it before, but I’ll say it again- stop tanning. Please? With the month of May being Melanoma Awareness Month, being a skin care therapist, and soon-to-be nurse I feel a responsibility to remind you that sun exposure is the number one cause of premature aging, and most importantly, skin cancer.

Regular skin checks (approximately every six months), wearing protective clothing and spf, and avoiding UV exposure is so important- especially in sunnier climates, like Arizona. With one of the highest rankings for skin cancer in the world, it is crucial to be on top of having your skin examined by your dermatologist. Although skin cancer is terrifying, and dangerous, it is one of the most treatable forms of cancer- when you catch it early. This is not a scare tactic, but rather a means to motivate your duty in being proactive.

In addition to having your 6 month check-up, keep your self-awareness high by noting changes in your body. What exactly are you looking in terms of warning signs when it comes to Melanoma? Just remember your A,B,C, D, & E’s. Should you notice a mole that may look different, or is even new, take note to the following:

A-     Asymmetry:  A benign (cancer-free mole) will not be asymmetrical. Meaning, if you draw a line straight through the middle, it will look the same on both sides.

B-      Border: A benign mole will have a smooth border. Often times cancerous lesions will have nodule-like borders that are raised and/or bumpy.

C-      Color: Is your mole the same color all the way through? Most benign moles have the same color throughout (a shade of light brown). Cancerous markings are often multi-colored and even sometimes black.

D-     Diameter: If  your mole is larger than the tip of a pencil eraser, it may be cause for concern. Often times the larger the mole, the more dangerous it is.

E-      Evolution: Is your mole changing in size, and or color? Is it growing? Non-cancerous lesions usually stay the same size and are not noticeably larger in size as time passes.

Although Arizona is one of the most risky states to reside when it comes to skin cancer, it is also one of the best places to find quality physicians that know what to look for, and how to treat you successfully- a few recommendations are listed below. Committing to your skin is a further commitment to your health! Take care of your body, and it will take care of you. Questions? Comments? Please list them below- I’m happy to help!

Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen

Spoiler alert! On this week’s upcoming episode of Keeping Up With The Kardashian’s, Kylie Jenner will finally confirm her highly-speculated lip injections. I, for one, have two things to say: 1) Duh. 2) More power to her! Finally, we can put an end to this teenage suction cup madness. <If you don’t know what I’m talking about google “Kylie Jenner Lip Challenge”- it’s ridiculous and extremely unsafe>. While I do not necessarily think it is age appropriate for someone 17 years old to get lip injections, I do think it is her prerogative.

So I’ll go ahead and ask the controversial question now, “If you don’t like something about yourself, why not change it?”. Not everyone is blessed with the features they desire and deem as beautiful (since beauty is subjective, after all.) Some people even suffer low self-esteem issues as a result. For me personally, someone having lip injections, getting a nose job, or having breast implants is really no different than someone dyeing their hair, getting eyelash extensions, a spray tan, or wearing acrylic nails. Fake is fake, is fake. Aesthetic medicine has evolved in many ways, and it is not quite as taboo as it once was. With an experienced practitioner whom is well trained and specialized, hundreds of options are now available to us and should be investigated further if it is of personal interest.

All of this being said, cosmetic enhancements and aesthetic treatments are better in moderation (in my opinion.) The greatest aesthetic treatment is the one you’re not sure happened. <Did she get botox or is she well rested?> Great physicians and nurses know how and where you may need enhancement and can tackle problem areas with a natural approach. When Kylie first got lip injections, it was about this time last year when pictures surfaced of her after attending the Coachella Music festival. At that time, her lips were slightly filled and appeared even larger with the help of over-drawing her natural lip border with a lip liner. As time as progressed, she has gradually added more and now <questionably> looks slightly “over-filled”.

Pictured: The evolution of Kylie’s Lips:

Kylie: Before Lip Injections

This side by side clearly demonstrates her added volume.

Kylie: After Lip Injections (This is her ideal level of correction, in my opinion)

Kylie: After Lip Injections (Slightly over corrected, in my opinion)

Are you interested in possibly receiving lip injections? I’ll answer some commonly asked questions that might help you to make the decision that is right for you.

1.)    What are lip injections? A hyaluronic acid (this is a naturally occurring acid found in our bodies) gel particle is injected into the lips with a needle. This unique gel particle can help to create lift and structure, while also building volume. Since this is an injection there are comfort measures like numbing agents, that can easily be applied before your treatment.

2.)    How many syringes will I need to purchase? Everyone’s anatomy is different, and what your lips may be able to hold without looking overfilled may be very different than someone else. Average amount that I typically see is usually around 1-1.5 syringes. Note however, that some fillers are on-label to use as many as 3 syringes in one lip to be fully-corrected. Each patient is different. Your practitioner should be able to give you an estimate before your procedure. Also keep in mind that you can start out small, and add more later if you desire to do so.

3.)    How much do lip injections cost? Typically syringes range anywhere from $400-$600 each/1ML. (Prices are different amongst different demographics). Seems pricey, right? Before you go looking for a bargain, I will beg you to PLEASE steer clear from spas that offer anything drastically lower than this price point. Often times you can find a “deal” or groupon and I would highly advise against doing this. This is not to say that every spa/practice being offered on groupon or living social is not legitimate, but you should be aware of the reasons why they might be able to offer a lower price point. It is not unusual that in those practices you may have a very inexperienced injector that can actually cause you harm if you are treated incorrectly. Another reason you could be getting such a “deal” is because the spa/practice could be importing product from a foreign country for a cheaper purchasing price. Importing is not safe, and it is illegal. Imported product is sometimes fake, expired, and/or diluted. Not to mention, there is no telling where the product may be prepared and/or packaged- think bathtubs. I'm serious. If someone is willing to take that type of risk on their patients to save a buck, they do not have your health or best interest at heart. Cosmetic treatments can unfortunately be expensive and an investment, but with that comes guaranteed authentic product, safe technique, and your desired outcome.

4.)    How often do I need to be injected? Lip fillers have an on-label guarantee of a 6-month duration. Again, everyone is different and some people metabolize product faster than others- give or take a few months.

5.)    How much down time will I need if I get lip injections? Complete swelling reduction usually resides within a week. I would advise to be injected on a day that you will be able to have some downtime for at least 2-3 days post-injection. With regular intervals of icing, and taking arnica prior to a treatment (natural supplement for inflammation found at health food stores) you can greatly reduce your down time. You can also slightly camouflage swollen lips with concealer and nude lip colors.

6.)    What if I don’t like my lip injections? Does this mean I’m stuck with them for 6 months? No! Filler is fortunately a treatment that can be easily reversed almost immediately. But go the right injector, and I guarantee you won’t be reversing the treatment because you’ll love it so much!

7.)    Where do I go? I would go to someone that is a well-known and experienced practitioner in your area. You can check websites like healthgrades.com for specific rankings on physicians. Often times highly ranked physicians also have experienced nurse injectors that will take care of you with an equal level of quality. Another option is asking your friends/family where they go, as I think referrals are always good. You can also come and see us at Hobgood Facial Plastic Surgery, we would love to have you! <Info provided below>.

I hope this was informative as I know it is a lot of information to absorb! If you have any other questions, please feel free to comment, or message me as I am happy to help you. Aesthetic treatment options don’t have to be scary, ridiculous, or obvious. Above all else, remember that they are your right! Whether you choose to divulge your information like Kylie did or not is completely up to you, and your procedures and treatments are completely protected by law (HIPPA).  Be true to you and the things you do. The enhancements you desire are yours for the taking- and that’s a beautiful thing.

Dermaplaning- Hair Today, Gone Tomorrow

With so many skin treatment options available, it can be difficult to determine just which one is right for you. I had always heard of dermaplaning and the benefits of doing so, but I had never been trained, nor had I incorporated it into my realm of practice- big mistake! I thought it was just another form of exfoliation that could be achieved through other modalities- which is in some ways true. But that being said, after much training and experience I can say that dermaplaning has a special place in the aesthetics world, and I’ll tell you why.

What is dermaplaning exactly? Dermaplaning is an exfoliating technique in which a ten blade (surgical scalpel) is gently scraped against the surface of the epidermis. Sounds scary, right? It isn’t. When your provider has the right training and practice, this method can gently and effectively remove the vellus hair from your face (peach fuzz), and also the dead skin that lies on the epidermal surface. While removing facial hair for all reasons being female is necessary, this temporary form of removal and exfoliation will also create a more youthful and smooth appearance which is the perfect canvas for foundation and makeup to be applied.

In addition to removing unwanted hair and dry epidermal skin, it can also further to exfoliate your skin when used in conjunction with an active enzyme or chemical peel. Once the outermost layer of the skin is exposed, the chemical peel can be better absorbed, which in turn enhances your results. This treatment is great for treating hyperpigmentation, wrinkles, anti-aging, and mild acne scarring. I also highly suggest this treatment to women who may be pregnant and/or are lactating (sans chemical peel, or active enzymes) as this is a safe and effective skin care alternative that will not cross the placental barrier.

I will warn you before receiving this amazing treatment that it is addicting, and patients remain loyal fans and believers once they start. If you have any questions or comments, please feel free to come and  see me for a complimentary skin consultation at Hobgood Facial Plastic Surgery.  We can discuss if this skin treatment is the right choice for you, and if it isn’t what would be a better fit for you. We look forward to meeting you!

Micro Needling- Stimulating Your Skin From The Inside Out.

While the aging process is largely determined by genetic factors, external habits and personal lifestyle choices such as smoking, extensive UV exposure, and poor nutrition also accelerate this natural progression. Micro needling is a highly effective treatment that helps to improve the overall tone and texture, in a completely non-invasive approach. <Yes, this means absolutely no down-time!>

Micro needling works on the deeper levels of the skin, helping to rejuvenate collagen and stimulate your skin’s elastin matrix by pushing serums into microscopic holes created in the dermis. While using topically-applied products such as Vitamin C and epidermal growth factors help to build new and strong collagen, micro needling treatments help to restructure the new cells and improve the way they lie within the tissues. Rather than lying flat, micro needling realigns the collagen by fluffing the cells, providing a fuller and more voluminous appearance. Micro needling is also an incredible option for scar revision and stretch marks and can show dramatic improvement after only a few treatments.

For more information, or to schedule an appointment and/or complimentary consultation with me to see if you are an ideal candidate for a micro needling treatment, please contact me at our office: Hobgood Facial Plastic Surgery- 480.214.9955 .
