With so many skin treatment options available, it can be
difficult to determine just which one is right for you. I had always heard of
dermaplaning and the benefits of doing so, but I had never been trained, nor had I
incorporated it into my realm of practice- big mistake! I thought it was just
another form of exfoliation that could be achieved through other modalities-
which is in some ways true. But that being said, after much training and
experience I can say that dermaplaning has a special place in the aesthetics
world, and I’ll tell you why.
What is dermaplaning exactly? Dermaplaning is an exfoliating
technique in which a ten blade (surgical scalpel) is gently scraped against the
surface of the epidermis. Sounds scary, right? It isn’t. When your provider has
the right training and practice, this method can gently and effectively remove
the vellus hair from your face (peach fuzz), and also the dead skin that lies on
the epidermal surface. While removing facial hair for all reasons being female
is necessary, this temporary form of removal and exfoliation will also create a
more youthful and smooth appearance which is the perfect canvas for foundation
and makeup to be applied.
In addition to removing unwanted hair and dry epidermal
skin, it can also further to exfoliate your skin when used in conjunction with
an active enzyme or chemical peel. Once the outermost layer of the skin is
exposed, the chemical peel can be better absorbed, which in turn enhances your
results. This treatment is great for treating hyperpigmentation, wrinkles, anti-aging,
and mild acne scarring. I also highly suggest this treatment to women who may
be pregnant and/or are lactating (sans chemical peel, or active enzymes) as
this is a safe and effective skin care alternative that will not cross the placental
barrier.
I will warn you before receiving this amazing treatment that
it is addicting, and patients remain loyal fans and believers once they start.
